Figures are realistic examples, not a price list. What you charge is your own decision.
Per garment, not per hour
Tailoring is billed per piece, and the piece is the whole job — cutting, sewing and finishing together. Fabric is separate, priced per yard for material you buy on the customer's behalf. Charging by the hour invites an argument about how long a sleeve should take.
What to take upfront
Half upfront is the norm, and it is not greed — it is the fabric. You are buying material for a garment only that customer wants, so a deposit that at least covers the cloth means a cancelled order does not come out of your pocket. State on the invoice what the deposit covered.
The lines most tailors and fashion designers forget
Every one of these is work you have already done or money you have already spent. Left off the invoice, it comes out of your margin.
- Fabric you bought on the customer's behalf, absorbed as 'part of the job'
- The third and fourth fitting, when two were quoted
- Rush work — the same garment in five days instead of three weeks
- Trims, lining, beads and buttons, bought in cash and never written down
- Alterations after collection, when the customer's size changed
Invoicing as a tailor
- Should I charge separately for fabric?
- Yes, as its own line. Bundling fabric into the sewing price makes your work look expensive and your material look free, and it leaves you no way to explain a price rise when the market moves. A separate line also lets a customer who supplies their own fabric see exactly what they are saving.
- How do I charge for rush orders?
- As a named line, not a quietly higher price. 'Express delivery — ready in 5 days' is something a customer understands and can decline. A silently inflated sewing charge is something they only notice when they compare it to last time.
- What if the customer keeps changing the design?
- Put the number of fittings on the invoice and price extra ones. Most disputes in tailoring are not about the money, they are about what was agreed — and a line that says 'includes two fittings' settles it before it starts.
A template gets one invoice out. The next fifty are the work.
WadMaster keeps your items and your customers, so the second invoice takes a minute and you can see which ones are still unpaid.
