How does withholding tax work on an invoice, 5% or 10%?
Withholding tax is deducted by your customer and paid to the tax authority on your behalf, so it lowers what lands in your bank but is not money lost — it is a credit against your own tax. The common Nigerian rates are 5% and 10% depending on the type of service and whether you are billing as an individual or a company. WHT is worked out on the value of the goods or service, before VAT: on a ₦500,000 invoice with ₦37,500 VAT, the WHT applies to the ₦500,000. The free calculator at wadmaster.com/withholding-tax-calculator shows what you will actually be paid.
